Wakeboarders vs Fishermen – Lake Hopatcong, NJ | Fishing & WakeboardingYou wake up at 5am on a clear day with only one thought on your mind. You are about to start your day off wakeboarding on the calmest water you’ve ever seen. You find the perfect cove to wakeboard in and start your session. Five minutes into your session, a fishing boat drives into your cove and anchors right in your path. What do you do? Being a wakeboarder that enjoys fishing, I can relate to both sides. It really comes down to respect. If you give respect, you get respect. There are some angry fishermen out there that would plow their boat into your wakeboard boat if you did them wrong. There are also angry wakeboarders out there that think the water belongs to them just because they wakeboard in that spot on a regular basis. It’s all BS! We all love the water so getting all pissed off because someone is trying to share the water is wrong. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of idiots out there – we call them AWAB’s (ass holes with a boat) that have no idea about boating or respect in general. Those people need to seriously get with the program and learn how to carry themselves on the water – or get off the water. Wakeboarding leaves you in a vulnerable state, you are in the water hanging onto a rope – safety is always on a wakeboarder’s mind because a lot is at stake. Wake created by other boats is also a concern for wakeboarders because it messes us up. Wake created by other boats also screws up fishermen. The loud engine scares away the fish. Wakeboarders and Fishermen on the same water is obviously not the best option but there are things that we can all do to make the best of the situation. I am curious to see if anyone out there has any ideas or stories about this topic. I honestly don’t care if there are fishing boats in the area. It’s the AWABs that get me going. If you drive a boat, you need to know and follow the rules. PERIOD! |
